Summary.... AMR estimates that US consumer spending on kiosk DVD disc rentals was $486m last year, with 77% of total kiosks belonging to Redbox, now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Coinstar. Redbox and other kiosk operators offer a real competitive threat, not just to Blockbuster and other remaining specialty bricks-and-mortar rental chains, but also (though to a much lesser extent) to Netflix and other subscription DVD rental services. AMR sees real danger to the studios' most critical cash cow - DVD and Blu-ray sales - and the digital delivery business.
